Abstract:
The chip breaker of index-able insert has the function of curling and breaking chips and protectingtools. The chip breaker,through its impact on cutting force,cutting temperature and chip morphology,affects cutters’service life indirectly in the cutting process. In this paper,the cutters with a variety of chip breakers wereused for cutting experiments,and the high一speed camera was adopted to analyze the process of chips’production,flow,curling and being broken in cutting area. Through using the wear gauge to observe the chip breakers,andcombining analysis of chip shape,the chip breakers’reasonable geometric parameters were defined. In order to reveal the rule about the influence of chip breaker making on cutting force,both the vibration and the cutting force inthe cutting process were collected by 3一D cutting force analyzer. Finally,the mechanism of action that chip breakers and feed rate made on chips’breaking was established through analyzing three factors of cutting parameters,chip breakers’geometry and cutting force. The research data would be supplied for the design and the applicationof chip breakers.
